AI is rapidly changing how we learn, work, build, and create value. For Africa, the opportunity is enormous, but access alone will not be enough. Sierra Leone and the wider continent must invest in education, digital infrastructure, institutional readiness, responsible adoption, and human capacity so that young people can use AI not merely as consumers, but as creators, problem solvers, and nation builders.

The Future Is for Everyone, But Africa Must Be Ready

After reading Mark Zuckerberg’s recent piece, The Future Is for Everyone, I found myself thinking less about the excitement surrounding artificial intelligence and more about the responsibility that comes with it. The most important question for Africa is no longer whether AI will transform the world, because that transformation is already underway. The more urgent question is whether we will prepare ourselves well enough to participate meaningfully in that future, shape it according to our realities, and ensure that its benefits reach more than a privileged few.

What interests me most about this moment is the idea of AI as a force for human empowerment. When properly understood and applied, artificial intelligence does not simply automate tasks; it expands what individuals are capable of doing. It allows people to learn faster, research more efficiently, build with fewer resources, solve problems more creatively, and create opportunities that may previously have required large teams, greater capital, or access to institutions that were beyond their reach.

I have experienced this personally. AI has significantly increased my productivity across education, research, software development, data analysis, business, and other areas of my work. It has allowed me to move from ideas to execution much faster, while also improving the quality and range of what I am able to produce. More importantly, it has created economic opportunities for me. I have been able to make more money using AI than I did in previous years, not because the technology simply does the work for me, but because it has multiplied my capacity to create value, take on more complex problems, and deliver solutions more efficiently.

That experience has shaped the way I think about AI. I do not see it primarily as a replacement technology. I see it as a capability multiplier.

This distinction matters, especially in Africa, where access to opportunity has historically been uneven. A young person in Freetown may have the intelligence, discipline, and ambition to compete with anyone in the world, yet still face limitations created by infrastructure, access to quality education, mentorship, research resources, financial constraints, and limited exposure to advanced tools. AI has the potential to reduce some of these barriers by making knowledge, technical assistance, tutoring, research support, and creative tools more widely available than ever before.

For education, the implications are profound. A student who once depended entirely on the availability of a lecturer can now receive support at almost any time. A learner struggling with programming can receive explanations, examples, debugging assistance, and practice exercises that respond to their level of understanding. A researcher can explore ideas, summarize complex literature, analyse information, and identify patterns more efficiently. A teacher can improve lesson preparation, develop stronger learning materials, personalize support, and reach more students without sacrificing the quality of instruction.

This is closely connected to the work we are building at Sierra Edutech Solutions. Our vision has never been limited to helping students pass examinations. We want to develop confident, independent learners who can think critically, solve problems, build practical solutions, conduct research, and approach technology as creators rather than passive users. Education, in my view, should not simply prepare people to reproduce what they have been taught; it should prepare them to understand unfamiliar problems, adapt to change, and continue learning throughout their lives.

AI gives us the opportunity to scale that vision in ways that traditional education alone cannot. The future of Sierra Edutech should not be restricted by the number of students who can sit in a physical classroom or by the number of hours a teacher can spend teaching each day. We should be thinking about intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning environments, AI-supported research, practical digital skills programmes, personalized academic support, and technology-enabled learning models that allow students to continue learning beyond the classroom.

The aim is not to replace teachers. In fact, I believe the more interesting future is one in which technology makes good teachers more powerful. A committed educator supported by AI can prepare better lessons, generate more relevant examples, develop practical exercises, identify student weaknesses, provide differentiated support, and serve more learners effectively. In that sense, the future of education is not about choosing between teachers and technology; it is about combining human judgement, mentorship, empathy, and experience with tools that extend our capabilities.

The idea of personal AI also raises important possibilities for learning. If every student can eventually access an intelligent tutor that understands their strengths, weaknesses, pace of learning, interests, and academic goals, then personalized education becomes much more achievable. For many families, private tutoring and specialist academic support are expensive and inaccessible. AI could help change the economics of personalized learning, making quality support available to students who may never have been able to afford it through traditional means.

However, we must resist the temptation to assume that technology automatically creates equality simply because it exists.

There are still serious barriers to AI adoption in Sierra Leone. Reliable electricity remains a challenge in many areas, internet access can be expensive or inconsistent, many students do not have personal computers, and even capable smartphones are not universally accessible. Beyond infrastructure, there are gaps in digital literacy, teacher preparedness, institutional capacity, research systems, local datasets, policy development, and access to computing resources.

If these challenges are ignored, AI could widen existing inequalities rather than reduce them. Students with reliable internet, strong devices, paid subscriptions, good digital skills, and supportive institutions would move faster, while others could be left further behind. That is why our national conversation should not simply focus on adopting AI tools; it should focus on building the conditions that allow people to use them meaningfully.

Government has an important responsibility in this process. Affordable connectivity, reliable electricity, digital infrastructure, access to devices, technology laboratories, teacher development, AI literacy, and responsible policy should increasingly be treated as national development priorities. These are no longer issues that belong only to the technology sector. They are becoming central to education, employment, entrepreneurship, productivity, and long-term competitiveness.

Educational institutions also need to rethink their relationship with AI. Universities and colleges cannot afford to respond to this transformation only through fear, particularly by focusing exclusively on plagiarism, examination malpractice, or academic dishonesty. Those concerns are legitimate and should be addressed, but prohibition alone will not prepare students for the world they are entering.

The professions our students are preparing for are already changing. Software developers are using AI, researchers are using AI, engineers are using AI, data analysts are using AI, educators are using AI, and businesses are integrating AI into everyday operations. Our institutions should therefore focus on teaching students how to use these systems responsibly, critically, ethically, and productively.

This will require changes in curriculum, assessment, and teaching practice. If a machine can easily reproduce an answer to a conventional examination question, then we should ask whether reproducing that answer is still the best measure of intelligence or competence. Education should increasingly evaluate reasoning, creativity, problem solving, practical implementation, verification, critical thinking, communication, and the ability to apply knowledge to real-world challenges.

The rise of AI also makes personal development more important, not less. Artificial intelligence can provide information, but it cannot automatically create discipline. It can generate ideas, but it cannot force someone to execute them. It can provide guidance, but it cannot create ambition, courage, integrity, or persistence. It can show someone a path, but the individual still has to decide whether to walk it.

As access to intelligence becomes more widely available, these human qualities may become even more valuable. Curiosity, discipline, adaptability, critical thinking, creativity, integrity, and the willingness to keep learning will determine how effectively people use the tools available to them. AI can multiply human capability, but what it multiplies will depend largely on the person using it.

This is why I increasingly view artificial intelligence as a human empowerment technology. It can allow one person to achieve what once required several people, lower the cost of experimentation, give small businesses access to capabilities that were once reserved for large companies, and enable young people to learn and build outside the traditional boundaries of institutions.

For Africa, this is a major opportunity. We have entered several technological revolutions later than other regions and, too often, have found ourselves consuming technologies developed elsewhere rather than shaping them ourselves. We should not repeat that pattern with artificial intelligence.

Participation must mean more than downloading applications and using foreign platforms. We must train people, support research, develop local datasets, create African solutions, prepare teachers, invest in infrastructure, strengthen institutions, and give young people the freedom to experiment, build, fail, learn, and try again.

Most importantly, we must develop people who understand that AI is not magic. It is a tool, and tools become truly powerful when they are placed in capable hands.

One of the ideas I took from Zuckerberg’s post is that the future should be broadly accessible rather than concentrated in the hands of a few. I believe that principle is important, but for Africa, access must be matched with preparation.

The future may indeed be for everyone, but benefiting from it will require deliberate effort.

Infrastructure will matter. Education will matter. Policy will matter. Institutions will matter. Access will matter. Personal responsibility will matter.

At Sierra Edutech Solutions, this is the future I want us to prepare for. A future where students do not depend on AI to think for them, but use AI to extend their own intelligence, creativity, and ambition. A future where young Sierra Leoneans can compete globally while solving problems locally. A future where we move beyond consuming technology and begin contributing more meaningfully to the systems, businesses, research, and ideas shaping the world.

Artificial intelligence will continue to become more capable. Our responsibility is to ensure that our people, institutions, and country become more capable with it.

The future is for everyone, but Africa must be ready.
